「関係副詞（when, where, why）」は、関係代名詞（who, which, that）と違って必ずしも省略できるわけではありません。
- 関係副詞は省略できないのが基本です。
例：
This is the house where I was born.（× This is the house I was born. → 不自然）
I’ll never forget the day when we first met.（× the day we first met → 可能、だが形式が変わる）
＊「形式が変わる」とは、以下のような意味です。
the day when we first met→ 「関係副詞 when を伴う関係副詞節」
the day (which) we first met→ 「関係代名詞 which + 前置詞 on の省略形」
（＝ the day on which we first met）
- 省略が可能になる場合
実は省略するというより、関係副詞を関係代名詞＋前置詞に置き換えて、その前置詞を落とすことができます。
where → in/on/at which, when → on/in which, why → for which
そして 前置詞 + which の前置詞部分を省略できることがあります。
例：
This is the house (where / in which) I was born.
→ 前置詞 in を落として This is the house (which) I was born in.
I’ll never forget the day (when / on which) we first met.
→ the day (which) we first met
That’s the reason why I came here.
→ the reason (which) I came here (for).
- 省略できない場合
文末に前置詞を残せないとき
例：This is the house I was born.（ in が抜けて意味が不完全）
文法的に混乱を招くとき
→学習者向けの正式な文や試験英作文では、省略しすぎると不自然に感じられることがあります。
why は特に注意
「the reason why」はOKですが、省略して「the reason I came here」とするか「the reason for which I came here」とするのがよりフォーマルです。
結論として、関係副詞は、フォーマルな文では残した方が明確で安全ですが、カジュアルな文や会話ではよく省略されます。
